Module 2 Learning Theories

Just like diets, learning styles, teaching styles, media, advice, etc. the best results are always found from using a little from everything.  There is no ONE CURE ALL remedy or answer for any problem.  The idea that how we all learn could only point to one theory is ridiculous!  Prior to reading these I probably would have felt like I had to pick a learning theory, but I agree with Kerr (2007) that each learning theory offers something useful for particular situations.  Also, Kapp (2007) states that learning is "multi-layered and multi-faceted"  and correlate to Bloom's Taxonomy.  If we want to produce critical thinkers and creative problem solvers we have to "cherry pick" (Kerr, 2007) from the different learning theories.

  1. Hi Tiffany,

I like your beginning comparisons and agree that there is no "cure all". Even for one illness you might have to take a variety of medications (not that we are saying that students are sick people). It is the same with application of theories in the classroom.

  2. Hey Tiffany,
I also thought about Bloom's Taxonomy when I read these articles. I had not thought about the way that we move up Bloom's Taxonomy by using different learning theories until I read the articles. I like the comment that "there is no one cure all remedy" that you made. Each child and each lesson might require a different aspect of several learning theories. Teachers have to be knowledgeable on all learning theories in order for us to draw useful information from them.

    1. Dorothea, students are kind of sick. They come to us to fill them up, correct whatever behaviorisms they do that prevent them from moving forward, and to keep them "healthy" by learning certain strategies/choices that they could make that would better their academic experiences.

      Bheitt,
I never made that connection either about Blooms Taxonomy and different learning theories. Interesting stuff huh!?
